Contracts and selling things...

So I finally agreed to the place I mentioned before. I'm beyond happy that I finally found a place to live.

I was ok with it when I first talked with the future roommate, and I still am, but now everyone is making me a tiny bit paranoid.

To explain, I will not have to sign a lease or a contract even after I asked the girl a few times. She just said she's laidback. I can just give her a check every month for rent. Should I be worried that there's no lease? I've asked her if she would kick me out by a certain month, etc, and she told me not to worry, that I could stay as long as I needed to graduate and that all I'd have to give her is a week's notice when I need to leave. I wanted something that was flexible since I plan to graduate before next August!

She's actually renting the place from someone else (she's covering the security deposit, etc), all I have to do is write a check to her every month that includes the rent which includes utilities. She seems nice but I think talking with a few friends has made me paranoid. Should I be worried?

Also, randomly, here's a pet peeve that has developed in the past month. I'm attempting to sell furniture on Craigslist. What's annoying is the amount of spam I get from people as well as people who email inquiring after the item, I email back within the day or the next, and then I never hear back from them.

PS Please vote in the poll on your right! Only 6 votes...:( I hope it's not because the question is boring!

Don't be paranoid. The roommate thing sounds like it will work itself out! :)

Well it sounds like she's subletting the apartment. Just know that without a lease, you can be kicked out immediately just as easily as you can leave on your own terms immediately.

If she won't sign a lease, you may still want to have something in writing at least spelling out the per month rent amount and stating how much notice should be given should you choose to leave or she chooses to stop subletting to you. With nothing in writing, she can kick you out at any time - she might still be able to if her lease with the landlord specifically says that she cannot sublet at all.

Sounds like the arrangement will probably work out just fine.

It's only of you have problems that you will run into problems... does that make sense? You will have no recourse if things go sour, which would make me a little nervous. But I've never met the girl, so really you are in the best place to judge. If you are comfortable, go with it!

And cheers for finding a place and roommate that you like!

@Rachel
I hope so!

@Mr. Condescending, for the love of pictures, and Miss Outlier
I hope the arrangement works as well, I at least have the email trail where the rent and etc was put in writing so to speak. And I also tried to ensure that I would not be kicked out at any time. So here's hoping that it works!

Honestly that roommate sounds like a dream. Her flexibility and laid back personality will probably be great. I wouldn't worry about it at all.
