To return a phone call if someone calls you about an emergency?
So I'm miffed at one of my lab members. So over the break, there was an emergency in the lab with a piece of equipment failing, namely our deep freezer which contains samples, etc. Ok, so I knew for a fact that at least 1 of my labmates were in town, and possibly another one.
I was in the middle of an experiment, and during one of the "breaks" I frantically call both. I leave messages on both of their phones, saying that it's an emergency, please either come in straightaway or give me a call. If I don't answer, leave a message and I'll call back right away. The samples in the freezer have to be moved immediately and I cannot do it all on my own, especially since I was in the middle of something.
I even called my PI since it was important since our lab's research is stored in the freezer. He returned my call (3 times even)...I felt so bad for interrupting his vacation by having to call his private cell number. My other lab member calls back, and says that she will come in, in a bit to help out. Ok, awesome! I ask her to give the other labmate another calling, stressing that it's an emergency and to call back at least or come in to help out.
This person then had the gall to email my labmate that night about an unrelated lab matter, and make no mention of the two phone calls he got during the day. Ok, ok, give him the benefit, wait longer...see if he says "I'm sorry for not returning the calls..."
Nope nada, he came into lab briefly a few days ago, does not say a word to me...but he mentions to my other labmate about how the freezer was...and asks if she had samples stored there. OK, now I'm royally miffed. Even if you DIDN'T have samples in the freezer, your LABMATES do (and the boss does as well). Are you telling me that you're ok with have your labmates research destroyed just because you didn't feel like coming in? UGH....
I'm waiting for the next time when I'm not in the middle of an experiment to say something to him...And no worries, I'm never really truly confrontational...BUT I am going to put my foot down. As the senior member of the lab, I guess it's up to me to say something.
What do you think?

Yes it's definitely a common courtesy, and mandatory if it's work crisis related. I can't believe that guy! You really do have to say something.
Hope everything's back to normal now *hug*
I'm like that, too, I tend to panic a little and want to get the situation taken care of ASAP--I can never understand people who don't share this sense of urgency, but I'm totally type A. I think if you can bring it up without being overtly confrontational, it's worth taking a stand over.
i cannot tolerate those who only think of themselves and their stupid asses. i mean, seriously. dont confront them. shove their experiment tubes up their asses. be mean, MJ.
wait, i think that's way too mean ;P
@Andhari
I did say something...too bad he had a convenient excuse..."oh, I switched my cell phone account, which happened to be on that day that you just said".
@Mara
LOL, tried and failed...as stated above...he had a convenient excuse.
@ejannz
Ooooh, can I? I would totally do it (in my imagination of course)...it's just too messy doing it in real life...
